The puzzle actually originated in 18th-century Switzerland as a number-placement game, but the modern version we know today was first published in the United States in 1979 under the name “Number Place”.

It wasn’t until the puzzle traveled to Japan that it became the worldwide phenomenon we know today. The Japanese named it “Sudoku”, which is short for “Sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru”, meaning “the digits must be single”.
